(NIDAHASA News) Thousands of opposition supporters in Sri Lanka clashed with allegedly "pro government thugs" today (10) at Colombo as anger swelled over the arrest of General Sarath Fonseka.
The massive demonstration organized by the political parties that supported was held in Hulshof, Colombo.
"We came here to do a peaceful protest against the arrest of General (Fonseka), but government thugs attacked us," K.H. Indrani, a supporter of Fonseka told Reuters.
"They stoned us and attacked with clubs and even threw glass bottles at us in front of this police force," she said, pointing at riot police. Police were not available for comment.
Amid attacks opposition supporters ran away and then returned attacking in their turn - whereupon the police used tear gas to drive people away, reports say.
Meanwhile in a joint statement, the opposition parties have said they fear Gen Fonseka may be killed in detention.
