Tue, 02 February 2010 09:15
(NIDAHASA News) Large heap of marked ballot papers favoring General Sarath Fonseka has been found in a garbage dump near the Technical College in Ratnapura, UNP Member of Parliament Thalatha Athukorala says.
More than 60% of the ballot papers taken into the MPs hands are marked in favor of General Sarath Fonseka, she added.
All these ballot papers bear the signature and the official stamp of the officials who conducted the Presidential Election on the 26th January. It was also noted that the election officials have been so generous to reject most of the valid votes marked for General Fonseka and they have bundled them into 65 papers into a bundle whereas the usual practice it to bundle them into 50 papers per bundle, Athukorala said further.
Meanwhile, a senior officer at the Department of Elections said to "Lanka News Web" web site that they have not received any complaint in regard to this find in Ratnapura. However, he mentioned that it is a violation of the Elections Law to destroy any ballot paper before six months of any elections and therefore, the Commissioner of Elections will have to immediately investigate into it, if such a complaint is made to the Department.
