(NIDAHASA News) Sri Lanka supreme court on today (02) ruled President Mahinda Rajapaksa can begin his newly-won six-year term in 19th November, giving him an extra year in power after he called polls two years before his first term expired.

"The Supreme Court says the new term begins on November 19 this year," a spokesman for the Presidents office said to media.

A seven judge Bench of the Supreme Court on Monday took up the reference made by President elect Mahinda Rajapaksa seeking the opinion on the question as to when his second term of office as President would start and end.

Supreme Court stated that the incumbent President sought the mandate from people for a further term of office of Presidency for 6 years. They maintained that the people had given him the mandate of first term of his office for 6 years and that it cannot be abridged or truncated.
