Pro-Muslim monk's wounds are self-inflicted, Police says

(NIDAHASA News) Police spokesman says the pro-Muslim monk who was found dumped with cut wounded had inflicted the cuts by himself.

Watareka Vijitha thero, who was openly vocal against extremist Buddhist groups was found dumped near Panadura, with cut wounds in his penis on last Wednesday (18). he was rushed to the Panadura hospital and later being transferred to Colombo due to his critical condition.

"We have checked number of CCTV footage from the sources along the road which monk claimed he has been abducted," Police Spokesman SSP Ajith Rohana said in a media briefing on Sunday (22).

According to Rohana, monks statement says that he had been abducted by a vehicle around 7.30p.m..

"But in any of those CCTV footages, we couldn't find the vehicle matching monk's description monk. But we noticed that a vehicle owned by monk's brother was traveling through this road at around 2.30 in the morning." he said.

Monk's brother later that he took monk in his vehicle and dumped in Bandaragama upon monk's own request, Police Spokesman said.

Citing Colombo Forensic Medical Examiner, Police spokesman claimed those wounds on monks body were "self-inflicted".

Police spokesman said that legal action would be taken against the monk for filing a fake complaint.
