Sri Lanka Media Groups Condemns Arresting of Reporter

(NIDAHASA News) Sri Lankan media groups condemned that arrest of a reporter close to the detained ex-army chief Sarath Fonseka.

"We request the Inspector General of Police to disclose the reasons behind the arrest and detention of Ruwan Weerakoon and make arrangements for him to receive legal aid immediately," groups said in a issued a joint statement.

He also received several death threats for maintaining close contact with Fonseka when the general led the military during the final phase of war, media groups said.

Ruwan Weerakoon has been worked as a defense reporter for The Nation and Bottomline Newspapers as well as Asian Tribune web site.

President Mahinda Rajapaksa few weeks ago ordered security forces to inform him before arresting any journalist.
